Fiberglass, Composites and Advanced Materials
With the movement towards a green economy Fiberglass, Composites and Advanced Materials are being utilized to replace conventional materials such as metal, wood and plastic in critical applications due to these fiber-based materials having a better balance between their strength and weight.

Fiberglass, is a form of fiber-reinforced plastic where glass fiber is the reinforced plastic. Fiberglass is also known as glass reinforced plastic or glass fiber reinforced plastic. The glass fiber is usually flattened into a sheet, randomly arranged or woven into a fabric and is lightweight, strong and durable. Fiberglass has the ability to be molded into various complex shapes and is widely used in insulation, bathtubs, boats, aircraft, roofing, exterior automobile parts, circuit boards and many other applications.

Composites, also known as Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites, are made from a polymer matrix that is reinforced with an engineered, man-made or natural fiber (like glass, carbon or aramid) or other reinforcing material.

Advanced Materials are materials with engineered properties created through the development of specialized processing and synthesis technology, including ceramics, high value-added metals, electronic materials, composites, polymers, and biomaterials.

Windmills
Wind Turbines, which produce alternative Wind Energy, operate on a simple principle - Wind turns the propeller-like blades of a turbine around a rotor (like a fan), which spins a generator, which creates electricity.
Most propeller rotor blades and nacelles for windmills are largely made from composites manufactured from resin compatible E-Glass yarns. Carbon fibre or aramid (Kevlar) is also used as reinforcement material. Fiberglass composite components allow for high strength at a low weight, so that longer and more efficient otor blades for larger wind turbines can be manufactured in cost effective ways.

Fiberglass reinforced rotor blades can reach lengths of up to 80 meters / 262 feet and are utilized on land and offshore in wind mill installations.

Wind Turbine Blade Recycling
If you wish to recycle Oversized Composite Scrap, Please ADD an inquiry to the Fiberglass & Composite Materials exchange.
The exchange service assists in directly connecting waste generators with recyclers and processors of composite by-products.

Wind Blades pose a unique challenge to maximize Environmental Sustainability due to a number of factors, wind turbine locations in relation to recycling facilities, logistics of dismantling and transportation of such a large item. The overall economics in insuring the proper and complete recycling of oversized composites may be highly unattractive. Natural ageing and the premature end-of-life due to damage and technology obsolescence appears to be a potential compounding problem. Mitigating the financial risk to avoid an abandon white elephant graveyard needs to occur sooner rather than later.
